Celebrating the volunteers that make the work of NWSFTCP possible

April 2024

The work of the North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) would certainly not be the same without the help of volunteers. During the 2023 flatback turtle nesting season on Thevenard and Delambre Island, 45 volunteers collectively completed:

  • 3264 hours of monitoring
  • 3360 kilometres of walking
  • Identification and measurement of 1443 turtles

To celebrate this incredible effort, a celebration was hosted at the DBCA office in Kensington in April 2024. The volunteers and staff were able to catch up, be individually recognised and thanked for their contribution and receive an update on the monitoring program and research highlights from the 2022 and 2023 nesting seasons.

Dr Bob Prince’s outstanding contribution as a volunteer was also celebrated – after working for DBCA since the 1960s, Bob continues to tirelessly assist the turtle team during his retirement by curating monitoring data and providing invaluable insights.
