Events
Events, such as EnviroFest pictured here, across the metropolitan Perth area and regional communities are great opportunities to talk to a range of people about flatback turtles. Please get in touch if you are hosting or are aware of an upcoming event that would be suitable and keep an eye on this page for events the Program will be attending. Photo - Clodagh Guildea/DBCA
Public talks
The Program embraces any opportunities to present to local communities that are home to flatback turtles, such as this public talk in Broome 2023. Talks and other public events are regularly delivered across the North West Shelf, including towns such as Onslow, Karratha, Port Hedland and Broome. Photo - Clodagh Guildea/DBCA
Community
Working together with community organisations, the Program supports Traditional Custodians and young people to visit remote locations and engage in turtle conservation. Sharing knowledge and empowering our future leaders is important to achieve the long-term conservation goals necessary for long-lived species like turtles. Photo - Clodagh Guildea/DBCA
Families and mentors associated with the Waalitj Foundation in Onslow have joined the North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program on Thevenard Island each nesting season since 2018. The families, including children as young as three, get to experience Thalanyji Sea Country together, where they learn about the flatback turtles with the Program’s team. They also get to spend lots of quality time swimming and fishing!
“Hopefully the kids from Onslow had a great experience on Thevenard watching the turtles, and it sparks a bit of interest in potentially becoming Rangers and looking after the wildlife and Country that they live on.” - Troy Cook, Waalitj Foundation Director and General Manager of Education
