The North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) is one of several “additional conservation programs” legislated within the approval of the Chevron Gorgon Gas Project (Variation Agreement (2009) to the Barrow Island Act (2003)).
The NWSFTCP effectively operates as an environmental offset established and implemented by the Director General of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
An independent Advisory Committee and Scientific Panel of Experts (Expert Panel) oversee the activities of the NWSFTCP and provide advice to the Director General and project team. They are responsible for responding to State and Ministerial requests for advice regarding whether the Gorgon Gas Project is having a significant impact on the Northwest Shelf flatback turtle population.
