Dr Scott Whiting

Principal Research Scientist

Scott has been leading the North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) since 2011. His role includes coordinating the NWSFTCP projects and activities, developing and maintaining partnerships, and driving research projects. Scott works closely with leaders in the DBCA Marine Science Program to integrate program outputs with wider departmental goals.

With a background in research across a diverse range of marine fauna in university, non-government and government sectors across Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia and the Australian Indian Ocean Territories (Ashmore Reef and Cocos Keeling Islands), Scott is passionate about delivering marine conservation outcomes through good science, capacity building and partnerships with Traditional Custodians.

"The successes with the NWSFTCP have been built of many varied and strong partnerships across stakeholders, including universities, government departments, non-government organisations, industry and businesses."

Scott is a member of the IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group, and an Advisory Committee member for the United Nations Indian Ocean and South East Asian Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on sea turtles. In 2023 he received a Churchill Fellowship to progress conservation of sea turtles globally.
