Why flatbacks?

Flatback turtles are special. They are the only marine turtle species in the world that live in one country, Australia, which makes them an endemic species. Our program ensures that the biology and ecology of flatbacks are understood, so that we can protect them into the future. Photo - Tristan Simpson/DBCA

Working with flatbacks

The North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program is a 60-year conservation program. Running out of Western Australia’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Program’s scientists work with other government and non-government organisations, education partners and Traditional Custodians to put in place long-term conservation actions for this long-lived species. Acknowledgement of Country

The Government of Western Australia acknowledges the traditional owners throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders both past and present.
